Violin lessons for all ages and abilities
I am an enthusiastic, friendly and experienced performer and teacher of traditional music for fiddle/violin, with over 10 years teaching experience. I specialise in the music of Scotland and Ireland but I have a wide taste in musical styles, including classical violin and Scandinavian music.
I teach from absolute beginner through to advanced and I will tailor the lessons to suit your individual needs. The first lesson will be used for both the student and I to get to know each other, and to ascertain what it is the pupil would like to gain from the lessons. The student’s own interests will determine what direction the lessons take, as I find that that is a great way to get the best out of working together.
Even though I specialise in Scottish and traditional violin, I teach the violin as an instrument rather than a particular genre. Regardless of what genre you would like to play, I think it is essential to have a solid understanding of the instrument itself. I will take you through technique of playing, how to build a repertoire, and the necessary theory to play the violin.
Over the years I have had the privilege of working with and sharing stages with some of the finest exponents of traditional music, including Kathryn Tickell, Aidan O’Rourke (Lau, Blazin’ Fiddles) renowned Scottish guitarist Tony McManus and Tom McConville to name a few. Highlights include performing with the Kathryn Tickell Band and Sting, performing at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, and undertaking tours of the UK and Europe with various musical outfits.
